March is a month of transformation. The Spring Equinox marks the point of balance—day and night held in equal harmony before the scales tip toward warmth and light. Nature is waking, buds are bursting, and the air hums with quiet energy.
March Spring Equinox Inspiration for Sketchbooks
This month, we’ll celebrate this seasonal shift by exploring texture in watercolour, using layers, marks, and mixed media to reflect the richness of spring’s awakening.

The Equinox: A Time of Balance & Growth
In folklore, the Spring Equinox is a time of renewal. In your sketchbooks, consider exploring the balance between dark and light, soft washes and bold marks, delicate details, and expressive textures.
Bringing Texture into Your Watercolour Practice
Spring is not just about colour—it’s about sensation. Think of the rough bark of awakening trees, the damp softness of moss, the featherlight touch of new petals.
This month, experiment with ways to add texture to your work:
🎨 Salt & Granulation – Sprinkle salt into wet washes for organic, unpredictable patterns, mirroring the randomness of nature.
🎨 Wax Resist – Use a white candle or wax crayon to create hidden textures before painting, evoking the layered mystery of the season.
🎨 Lifting & Scraping – Lift pigment with tissue for ethereal effects, or scratch into damp paint to mimic the intricate veins of leaves and petals.
🎨 Natural Stamping & Mark Making – Use found materials—twigs, leaves, even feathers—to print or drag through paint, echoing nature’s textures.
Wildlife & Folklore to Inspire You
🐰 Hares & the Moon – The hare, sacred to Ostara, symbolises intuition and renewal. Try capturing one mid-leap with fluid, expressive brushstrokes.
🌿 Ivy, Moss & Ferns – These plants thrive in the dampness of early spring. Use loose, splattered marks and granulation medium through watercolour and ink to create their intricate patterns.
🦉 Equinox Birds – Owls, symbols of wisdom, and songbirds, heralds of light, both feel deeply connected to this time of year. Experiment with feathery textures to bring them to life.
A Seasonal Poem for Inspiration
"Spring" (extract) by Christina Rossetti:
There is no time like Spring,
When life’s alive in everything,
Before new nestlings sing,
Before cleft swallows speed their journey back
Along the trackless track –
God guides their wing,
He spreads their table that they nothing lack,
Before the daisy grows a common flower
Before the sun has power
To scorch the world up in his noontide hour.
Rossetti’s words add a lyrical touch to the theme of awakening and balance–ideal for sketchbooking. 🌿✨
Welcoming Spring with a Sense of Play
Let’s loosen up this season, embrace texture, and experiment fearlessly. Nature isn’t perfect, and neither is art—its beauty lies in organic forms, unexpected marks, and the way colours flow and interact.
Let yourself be guided by curiosity, and share your work with the group as we step into the light together.
Happy painting!

I love the colours on the blossoms and magnolias but not sure where to start trying to paint them!
Yes, the pretty pinks and violets are lovely. I'm working on a blossom tutorial - so you can paint along with me when it's ready! 🌸
Amazing!
